You Don't Know How It Feels: A Review of the original graphic novel Homestead.
In 1868 a former soldier gets a small plot of land, frees a woman and her two choldren who are trapped by her husband and goes to live his life peacefully with them away from the town they were in a lamd already populated by the Lakota Nation. Meanwhile, on the Lakota Nation land lives a proud warrior, his wife and a Medicine Man who is angry at the fact that outsiders have moved onto their land. The Medicine Man known as Maka induces the young warrior with a magical spell and what happens next is a story of two men fighting to survive.
Homestead is a werewolf tale written by Dirk Manning with art by Les Lindrn Garner. The magic of Dirks writing lies within the story as he is able to give a complete story of Bill Branson without spelling it out to the reader. The book has clues throught that fill in the gaps we the readers need to know. With help from Rau Redsky Blackhawk, a Lakota creative consultant, the Lakota people are written in a respectful and beliveable manner. The art by Garner is absoulutly stunning and so very detailed. It reminded me of early John Severin. Colin Johnson brings that art to even more life with colors that just pop out right at you.
Homestead is a nice afternoon read that will be an incredible addition to your bookshelf and it is a story you will want to revisit several times especially to look at all the small details in the art. Homestead gets 5 out 5 what does Tom Petty have to do with all of this questions.
